Future City® Global Competition: Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers to Build Floating Cities

PR Newswire

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Future City® Competition, an annual event organized by DiscoverE (Discover Engineering), is once again inspiring middle and high school students to dream big and tackle global challenges. Now in its 33rd year, this dynamic STEM program challenges students to imagine, design, and build cities of the future, with this year's theme, "Above the Current", focusing on floating cities that address the pressing issues of rising sea levels and climate change. Students will design innovative solutions and provide two examples of how their floating cities function while keeping citizens healthy and safe.

Future City has become a launchpad for aspiring engineers, with over 70,000 students from more than 1,800 schools across 37 U.S. regions, as well as teams from Canada, China, and Nigeria participating annually. Regional winners will advance to the global finals, held in Washington, DC, from February 15-18, 2025, during Engineers Week.

"The Future City Competition is an incredible opportunity for students to unleash their creativity and think critically about real-world challenges," says Kathy Renzetti, Executive Director & CEO of DiscoverE. "Every year, we are amazed by the innovative ideas these students present, and it's inspiring to see their passion for building a better, more sustainable future."

Exciting Opportunities and Big Rewards

Students will present their innovative solutions through detailed essays, scale models, and dynamic presentations, vying for prestigious prizes. Middle school participants will compete for the grand prize—$7,500 for their school's STEM program, generously sponsored by Bentley Systems. High school teams, now officially part of the competition, will have the chance to win valuable college scholarships, opening doors to their future careers in engineering and technology.

DiscoverE programs, including Future City, are supported by leading industry sponsors. At the Visionary Level: Bechtel Group Foundation, NCEES, and Overdeck Family Foundation. At the Leader Level: Bentley Systems Inc., Northrop Grumman Foundation, PMI Educational Foundation, TE Connectivity, UL Research Institutes, and United Engineering Foundation. At the Champion Level: RTX and Shell Energy. At the Supporter Level: BAE Systems, Glenn W. Bailey Foundation, and ON Semiconductor Foundation.
