PASO ROBLES, Calif., July 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- "Your hair is truly your crowning glory," says Ashley Hamman, hair colorist and owner of Paso Robles' Ashley Jay Hair. Good shampooing habits are the best way to help keep hair healthy, shining, and avoid those bad hair days.
A huge part of Hamman's services over the past 20 years has been advising clients about the best haircare practices. Proper hair washing habits and good nutrition are the most important haircare practices, reports Hamman, who recently documented shampooing tips. Those tips are available for clients during appointments and also online to others who follow Ashley Jay Hair on social media.
Here are 10 habits to follow to wash hair the right way:
- Detangling hair before washing prevents further tangling and breakage while washing. Use a detangling solution and gently pass a wide-toothed comb through your hair.
- Wash with lukewarm water to preserve the natural oils that help keep hair healthy.
- Be gentle. Scrubbing too hard irritates the scalp and damages hair follicles.
- Choose a shampoo that is formulated for specific hair types to avoid dryness and scalp issues. Get good advice from the Paso Robles hair colorist at Ashley Jay Hair.
- Use about a quarter-sized amount of shampoo to avoid stripping away the natural oils.
- Avoid washing too frequently and drying out the scalp.
- Use a conditioner that is formulated for specific hair types. The appropriate conditioner helps lock in moisture.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of shampoo and conditioner. Product buildup can create other issues for hair.
- To dry, gently blot with a microfiber towel instead of rubbing.
- Don't use heated styling tools on wet hair. Let it dry until it's slightly damp first.
Hamman also advises that occasional scalp treatments or "hair masks" are excellent for maintaining a healthy hair and scalp.
